Encoder FAQ, Support, and Customization

Support and Demos

Q1. Do you have products that comply with the EU RoHS Directive, RoHS 2? Can you issue a certificate of compliance?

Yes.

Our products, including rotary encoders, direct drive motors, counters, drivers, and other peripheral equipment, comply with the EU RoHS Directive, RoHS 2, except for some models.

We can also issue a Certificate of Non-Use for RoHS Restricted Substances, 10 substances.

Please note that the lead time varies by model and may take anywhere from about one week to several months.

For details, please contact us through the inquiry form.

Q2. Do you offer demo or loan units?

Yes, some models are available for loan.

These units are intended for checking the outer dimensions, resolution, and output signal, so they are not covered by product warranty.

The loan period is up to 3 weeks.

If you are interested, please contact us through the inquiry form.

Q3. I would like to obtain a product specification sheet or instruction manual.

Yes, that is possible.

These documents are not posted on our website, so please contact us through the inquiry page.

A representative will get back to you.

Q4. Can you provide on-site support overseas?

We do not provide local on-site support for products exported overseas.

If you suspect a failure and would like us to investigate, please send the product by itself to us so that we can carry out inspection and analysis.

If the product has a connector, please include the mating connector cable, or cut off the connector section before sending it.

If you plan to export our products overseas, please inform us in advance of the following information.

• Destination country
• End-user name
• Intended application, equipment name

If our products are to be exported overseas, please make sure they are sufficiently evaluated in Japan first.

Customization

Q1. Please tell me about examples of encoder customization.

We have many customization records. Below are just a few examples.

• Resolution changes
Even if the required resolution is not listed in the catalog, it can be produced through new design of a glass disk or metal disk.
Please let us know your desired resolution.

• Connector cable
We can assemble the connector used in your equipment and deliver it with the product.
Please note that we first need to confirm whether the connector can be sourced by us and whether we have the necessary equipment for assembly.

• Shaft shape changes
For example, shaft length changes, shaft diameter changes, hollow shaft inner diameter changes, or changing to a set-screw type.

• Full customization
We can also manufacture a product from scratch according to your requested specifications.

If you have any issues, such as your current encoder being discontinued, please feel free to contact us.

Q2. Is it possible to produce encoder cables with a specified connector attached?

Yes, it is possible.

We can handle this as a customization option.

Because production can be completed under our warranty coverage up to the connector section, the product can be used immediately after purchase.

Below are connector manufacturers with which we have previous installation experience.

• Japan Aviation Electronics Industry, Ltd. JAE, https://www.jae.com/
• Tajimi Electronics Co., Ltd., https://ssl.tajimi.co.jp/
• MOLEX, https://www.japanese.molex.com/molex/home
• TE Connectivity, https://www.te.com/jpn-ja/home.html
• Hirose Electric Co., Ltd., https://www.hirose.com/corporate/ja/

Whether customization is possible depends on the availability of inspection jigs, so please contact us first.

Wire-Type Encoders

Q1. I would like to know the wire outer diameter of the wire-type linear scale encoder, MLS-50 Series.

The wire outer diameter is approximately 0.58 mm.

It is also possible to change the wire pull-out angle by using a pulley.
We recommend a pulley with an outer diameter of φ30 mm or more and an R groove.

Q2. I would like to know the resolution and reading value of the wire-type linear encoder MLS-30-4500-1000.

MLS-30-4500-1000 outputs 50 pulses when the wire is pulled out by 1 mm. The total stroke length is 1000 mm.

Since it outputs 50 pulses per 1 mm of wire stroke, the resolution is 0.02 mm.

For the model name MLS-30-450-1000 type, the output is 5 pulses per 1 mm of wire movement, so the resolution is 0.2 mm.

Q3. Please tell me about the wire winding tension.

Wire winding tension of 0.98 N to 2.94 N, about 100 gf to 300 gf, means that the spring tension increases in proportion to the wire pull-out length from 1 mm to 500 mm.

The encoder uses a wire winding structure in which the rotating drum is driven by a mainspring inside the encoder.

The wire tension is not strictly adjusted and controlled individually.

We are sorry, but we cannot provide individual adjustment of wire tension.

Incremental Type

Q1. The Z-phase output of the Micro Encoder is described as negative logic. What does that mean in the specification?

With negative logic output, the signal falls within the range where the Z phase is detected. Outside the detection range, the output remains high.

Except for the MES-45 type, which has positive logic Z-phase output, all of our products use negative logic output for the Z phase.

Q2. I would like to know the meaning of the mechanically allowable maximum rotational speed and the maximum response frequency.

The mechanically allowable maximum rotational speed refers to the allowable rotational speed of the bearings installed inside the encoder. For the ME20P and ME30P series, this is up to 6,000 rpm.

The maximum response frequency refers to the number of pulse signals that can be output in one second. In the standard specification, it is 100 kHz, 100,000 pulses per second. For multiplied division specifications, support is available up to 1000 kHz, 1,000,000 pulses per second.

With mechanically high-speed bearings installed, support for 10,000 rpm, instantaneous, is also possible.

Q3. What is the rotational angle accuracy of a rotary encoder? Is there any range that can be inspected, tested, or calibrated?

We do not specify the absolute mechanical rotational angle accuracy of our products. Instead, we indicate only the accuracy error of pulse output signal precision, namely phase difference and duty ratio.

1. The pulse signal is output for each cycle, T, as the resolution per revolution.

2. The phase difference accuracy between A phase and B phase for each pulse cycle, T, is T/4 ± T/8.

3. The duty ratio accuracy error of the pulse signal high/low waveform is within ±30%, actual value ±10%.

For all of our rotary encoder products, the calibration certificate issued is general calibration under our own standards. JCSS calibration is not supported.
For details about our calibration certificate, please refer to this page.

Q4. I would like to know the inertia of the rotary encoder.

MES-30 moment of inertia: 1.8×10-6 kg・m2
MES-20 moment of inertia: 2.7×10-7 kg・m2

Please contact us regarding other models.

Roller Encoders

Q1. I would like to replace the rubber part of the roller encoder.

We do not supply the rubber roller part by itself from the viewpoint of quality assurance.

Because the roller rotating shaft and the encoder rotating section are directly connected, abnormal output may occur depending on how it is installed, so the roller is not sold as a single part.

Normally, we ask you to send the actual product to us, and we replace and repair the roller unit section.

Absolute Encoders

Q1. I would like to know the angular accuracy of rotary encoder MAH-85-2097152N1.

We do not provide calculated angular accuracy data or calibration support for this value.

As an actual measured error value during product development testing, it is approximately ±20 arcseconds.

Please note that this value should be treated as a guideline only.

Q2. For encoder MAH-42 hollow shaft fixing, I would like to know the tightening torque applied to the hollow shaft.

The tightening torque value for the nut on the M8 screw at the tip is approximately 12.5 N·m.

Q3. When supplying rotary encoder MAH-19 together with the decoder board, how should MAH-19 and the decoder board be connected?

The serial communication cable between MAH-19 and the decoder board should be connected by soldering to the connection section on the decoder board side.

Q4. Is an output cable for the decoder board included? If not, please tell me the recommended specification.

No cable for connection to the decoder board is included.

The cable should be soldered to the board through-hole. The through-hole inner diameter is φ0.8 mm, and AWG28 core wire is recommended.
